Kundli Matching for Marriage: The Complete Vedic Guide

In Vedic tradition, marriage is considered a sacred union that ripples across seven lifetimes. Kundli matching — the comparison of two birth charts before marriage — has been practiced for thousands of years to assess compatibility, longevity, and prosperity of the union.

But there's a lot of confusion about what kundli matching actually involves. Most people only know about the "36 points" system. The reality is far richer — and more nuanced.

What is Kundli Matching?

Kundli matching (also called Kundali Milan or Horoscope Matching) is the process of comparing two birth charts to evaluate:

The primary system used is Ashta Koot Milan — a framework that examines 8 specific compatibility factors using the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) positions of both individuals' Moon signs.

The Ashta Koot System: 8 Compatibility Factors

The 8 Koots (categories) and their maximum point values:

1. Varna (1 point) — Spiritual Compatibility

Assesses the spiritual and psychological nature of each person. Four categories: Brahmin (spiritual), Kshatriya (warrior), Vaishya (merchant), Shudra (worker). Points awarded when the groom's Varna is equal to or higher than the bride's.

2. Vasya (2 points) — Mutual Attraction & Control

Examines the natural dominance and attraction between the two Nakshatra groups. Indicates who naturally leads in the relationship and whether that dynamic is harmonious.

3. Tara (3 points) — Destiny & Longevity

Calculated from the birth Nakshatra of each partner. Determines whether the stars support long life and health for both partners within the marriage.

4. Yoni (4 points) — Physical & Sexual Compatibility

Assigns each Nakshatra to an animal symbol. Compatibility between the animal symbols indicates physical chemistry, intimacy, and mutual attraction. The most intimate compatibility factor.

5. Graha Maitri (5 points) — Mental & Intellectual Compatibility

Compares the ruling planets of each partner's Moon sign. Indicates friendship between their minds, whether they think in aligned ways, and intellectual harmony.

6. Gana (6 points) — Temperament & Nature

Assigns each person to one of three Ganas: Deva (divine/gentle), Manushya (human/balanced), or Rakshasa (fierce/intense). Ideally both partners share the same Gana.

7. Bhakoot (7 points) — Emotional & Financial Compatibility

One of the most important factors. Examines the relationship between the Moon signs of the two individuals. Certain Moon sign combinations are considered highly inauspicious (2–12, 5–9, 6–8 relationships).

8. Nadi (8 points) — Health, Genetics & Progeny

The single highest-weighted factor. Assigns each Nakshatra to one of three Nadis: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), or Antya (Kapha). Nadi dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi — this is considered the most serious dosha in kundli matching, associated with health issues and difficulty having children.

Interpreting the Total Score

Score Assessment
36/36 Extremely rare; theoretically ideal
32–36 Excellent match
28–32 Very good match
24–28 Good match
18–24 Average — workable with other factors positive
Below 18 Poor match — not recommended without deeper chart analysis

A score below 18 out of 36 is generally considered insufficient for marriage in traditional Vedic practice.

Beyond Ashta Koot: What Astrologers Actually Look For

Experienced Vedic astrologers go well beyond the Guna score. The following are examined separately and can override a high Guna score:

Nadi Dosha

When both partners share the same Nadi, this is considered the most serious obstacle. Traditional texts associate it with health problems, separation, or difficulty with children. Remedies exist but the dosha carries significant weight.

Bhakoot Dosha

Certain Moon sign combinations (particularly 6–8 and 2–12 relationships from each other) are considered inauspicious. Like Nadi dosha, remedies are available but the combination requires careful analysis.

Mangal Dosha

If Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house in either chart, Mangal Dosha is present. This is one of the most discussed factors in Indian marriage matching. See our Mangal Dosha guide for full detail.

7th House Analysis

The 7th house governs marriage directly. Astrologers examine:

Venus and Jupiter

Venus (love, relationships) and Jupiter (wisdom, prosperity) are assessed in both charts. A well-placed Venus in both charts is a strong positive indicator.

Longevity Indicators

Traditional matching includes checking that both charts indicate reasonable longevity — a deeply difficult topic, but one that classical texts include.

Common Misconceptions

"A score below 18 means we can't marry." No. A skilled astrologer weighs the complete picture. A couple with 16 Gunas but no major doshas, strong 7th houses, and good Venus placements may be more compatible than a couple with 28 Gunas but Nadi dosha.

"A score of 36 means a perfect marriage." Also no. The Guna system captures Nakshatra-level compatibility but doesn't examine planetary positions, house placements, or dasha timing.

"Kundli matching guarantees the outcome." It doesn't. It assesses probability and highlights areas of harmony or friction. Like any tool, it's most useful as guidance, not verdict.

The Modern Perspective

Many contemporary Vedic astrologers argue that the Ashta Koot system, while valuable, was designed for an era of arranged marriages with limited courtship. They place greater weight on:

The Guna score is a starting point, not an ending point.
